If you’ve noticed that your day-to-day life has become progressively harder, or if you’ve been feeling emotionally weighed down, out of sorts, or overwhelmed, it may be worthwhile to check in with your mental health. It is actually quite common to experience the beginning of mental health distress with increasing discomfort. For example, the beginning of depression can start with frequent agitation, irritability, sadness, or feeling like you’re dragging a weight around with you every day. Anxiety issues can often start with feeling bodily stress, overwhelm like you have too much to handle all at once, or mental stress such as worry, rumination, shut down, and avoidance of anything that feels like you just don’t want to deal with it.
When mental health is out of sync, it can start to impact the experience of your relationships and your every day life. You may feel generally less comfortable in your skin, or tasks start to feel daunting and overwhelming, and more. Your thoughts may keep you from sleeping comfortably, your body may feel tense, nervous, anxious, or even panicky. Panic attacks are even normal to experience when anxiety from trauma is triggered. And so on. When mental health is out of sync, not seeking help often tends to see the problem grow while people wait for it to subside. The problem is that mental health doesn’t tend to fix itself. It often tends to worsen until the distress can’t be denied any further because the discomfort becomes so great. It’s also not uncommon for phobias to show up, such as agoraphobia, fear of flying, and more. When emotions are out of sync, it can make things that usually aren’t intolerable suddenly much more difficult than usual.
Therapy is a place for you to right the ship and have the support you need to bring your emotional life back into sync. It’s also a place to heal, and make any changes to yourself and your life that you wish to carry for. If you feel you could use the support, send me a message to see how we can work together.
