Trauma Therapy
Trauma that is carried over time can overwhelm both the mind and body…
Trauma can create difficulties for people throughout their lives. Whether trauma happens at a young age, or somewhere along way later on, the impact of trauma can result in a number of different symptoms when triggered. Part of the complexity of trauma is that it can be triggered in so many possible ways. For example, the sounds of someone’s voice, a certain tone, a familiar phrase, a scent, a certain sound, a memory, a flashback, and more.
When trauma is triggered, it becomes possible for the mind and body to react almost as if they’re either reliving the experience internally (a “flashback”), or the emotions of the trauma can be confused and projected into the present. For example, you may become enraged with a person in the present seeing them as the source of deep anger and rage when they trigger a familiar feeling to an old trauma.
Unprocessed trauma can have a way of increasing anxiety, or even cause panic. When triggered, the mind and body can feel completely activated with fear and worry, even if you are aware that you’re not in danger. Your heart rate might increase, or you might feel pain, tension, or significant physiological distress. Perhaps migraines or digestive issues may occur.
In relationships, triggered trauma can make it difficult to experience intimacy or closeness, or struggle with trust and commitment. Overall, the more we try to avoid our carried traumas, often the more they end up having an impact.
